On Choosing a Civilization
Before picking which of the several dwarven empires my group is from, I decided to take a look at their leaders. Most of them were fairly unremarkable, but one in particular stood out to me:

Zasit Grottotrades, King of the Ring of Sieges.

Zasit was interesting because he was young for a dwarf - born in the year 177, making him just 22 years old in the year 199. Dwarves live almost 200 years, if they're lucky, so he's very young to be a king. The other interesting thing was that he ascended the throne on the death of his father - Avuz Stormoil, the previous king.

So, I decided to look him up in more detail.

First of all, he's the eldest of the five sons of Avus Stormoils and his wife Melbil Splashedtraded.

His early life was eventful - the first thing the game thinks is worth telling me about is that he was attacked in late autumn of the year 185 by Erib Tinbowels, a dwarven woman afflicted with a curse of werelizardness, lost the fight, but was luckily uninjured. He was eight years old.

In early winter 187, he was attacked by Onul Veilcopper, another lady dwarf cursed with werelizardness - once again, he lost the fight but managed to get away unharmed.

Being the child of the king puts you in line for the throne, but doesn't excuse you from labour in the meantime. In 189 - the year he turned twelve, which is the dwarven age of majority - Zasit became a farmer in the dwarven settlement of Praisedpillars.

In 198, at the age of 21, he married his wife Asmel Helmtamed. She was 30 at the time, and worked as a fish dissector in a neighbouring settlement until she moved to live with her husband in Praisedpillars and became a ranger all in the same year.

In 199, following the death of his father, Zasit moved to Pickglacier, the capital, and was crowned king. His wife Asmel became Queen Consort, but didn't move to Pickglacier with him.

Now, the death of his father was an interesting thing in and of itself. The old king apparently starved to death. He'd only become king himself in 195 - before that he was a craftsdwarf. In 197 he "became obsessed with his own mortality and sought to extend his life by any means."

In 197, the king was also attacked by Kadol Oilbite, a dwarf who was once a site administrator before being afflicted by the "rabbit monster curse" by being bitten by one of said were rabbit monsters. After that he fled civilization and spent a couple of decades sneaking into towns and eating the livestock and fighting anyone who discovered him.

Two years after being attacked by the rabbit monster cursed guy and deciding to extend his life by any means, he starved to death in early winter, leaving behind his wife and five sons, the eldest of whom took the throne.

None of this is at all necessary to play the game, and I won't be doing this kind of research for /every/ dwarf that shows up (although the game will totally let you), I just wanted to provide an example of the kinds of stories going on behind the scenes.

So, our civilization - the Ring of Sieges. It's the smallest of eight dwarven empires on the map, but still holds a respectable amount of territory. Our symbol is a dimple cup - an underground plant that can be made into a blue dye.

It began with the founding of Pickglacier in the year one, under the reign of the dwarven queen Obok Fingergorge. A quick check through shows that we've never been at war with another civ, and most of our enemies have been various bandits, cursed people, and wild animals. Looking at Pickglacier itself, people seem to have been starving to death in the capital since about 156 - I'm not sure what's going on there, but it sounds like a great reason for leaving and founding our own fortress!
